Florida’s Sophia Wang named 2022 USTA National Junior Scholar Athlete

The USTA today announced Sophia Wang of St. Petersburg, Florida. was named the female recipient of the 2022 USTA National Junior Scholar Athlete Award, honoring high school tennis players who best demonstrate that tennis is the sport of opportunity for education, advancement and character development.

Wang, a recent high school graduate from St. Petersburg, is committed to play college tennis at Columbia University in the fall. Wang, who trains at the Saddlebrook Academy, is one of the top high school tennis recruits in the country and is ranked amongst the top 18-and-under girls in the country. She has had impressive showing at a number of USTA national junior tournaments and won the Sportsmanship Award at the 2021 USTA National Winter Championships. Off the court, Wang has exceled in a number of AP classes, holding an impressive 4.5 weighted GPA.

“Sophia and Masato’s achievements on the court, in the classroom and in the community truly make them exemplary leaders among their peers,” said Craig Morris, Chief Executive, Community Tennis. “They are both very deserving of this honor and have bright futures ahead of them.”

This is the tenth year the USTA has awarded its National Junior Scholar Athlete award. To qualify,
students must have an unweighted GPA of 3.75 on a 4.0 scale and be ranked in the Top 100 of the USTA Boys’ or Girls’ 18s national standings. A written essay, as well as leadership and sportsmanship, were also considered. This year’s winners will be honored at the USTA Annual Meeting & Conference in the spring of 2023.

Three Counties Punch Ticket to Nationals at Adult 18 & Over 3.0/4.5 Sectional Championships

It was another weekend filled with tennis fun in the sun at the USTA National Campus. Multiple counties from across the state gathered to compete at the Adult 18 & Over 3.0/4.5 Sectional Championships.

Three counties took home the four titles that were up for grabs, with two of them winning their first-ever Sectional Championship. 

In the 3.0 division, the Women’s and Men’s draw was dominated by Miami-Dade County. The teams representing the South Florida area dominated edged out 3-2 victories in both draws. This was their first time winning in the Men’s Division and second for the ladies. 

Over in the 4.5 Women’s flight, South Florida foe, Broward County took down Orange in a convincing 4-1 win. This marked Broward’s fourth championship since 2012.

The 4.5 Men’s division was conquered by Palm Beach County in a tight 3-2 win over Escambia. This was Palm Beach’s first title in this draw. 

The competing teams represented various clubs, parks, recreational departments, and organizations, and finished at the top of their local leagues during the 2022 season to advance to the USTA Florida 18 & Over Sectional Championships.   

These champions have qualified for the 2022 USTA League National Championships and will compete in October.
