Cal sprinted out to a 6-1 start in 2023, and there was much cause for optimism. Seven games may be a small sample size, but those six wins included a road series win over Houston, a road win over Stanford, and a singular win over Connecticut. The Golden Bears’ uber-talented sophomore class had quickly asserted itself, including Ian May establishing himself as a legitimate Friday night ace. The lefthander pitched 14 shutout innings in his first two starts, surrendering just 8 hits.

Hagen Smith is that dude … I didn’t exactly go out on a limb coming into the season when I chose Arkansas lefthanded pitcher Hagen Smith as my Pitcher of the Year. After all, he is an accomplished starting pitcher and a premier prospect. But after having a so-so start on Opening Weekend, Smith was outrageously good in a win over Oregon State this past weekend.
