Returning to Red Bull Arena on the Monday before Thanksgiving is not what many had in mind, but to celebrate NJ/NY Gotham FC’s first-ever National Women’s Soccer League Championship, dedicated supporters were willing to make the trip.

After initially failing to put together a team celebration with fans to commemorate the team’s historic win, Gotham FC teamed up with supporters group Cloud 9 to put together a last-minute tribute to the team. Even with many having already left the market, 15 players were in attendance along with head coach Juan Carlos Amorós and general manager Yael Averbuch West to receive their flowers from season ticket holders and fans.

“I thought the event was nice for something put together a little on the fly,” Gotham supporter Marie Bober said. “Definitely some tweaks to be made next time so that everyone knew what to expect and could see and hear, but the energy was really good. I also really appreciated the players who could make it for coming out.”

Food and drinks were served while cheers echoed through the rooms of Red Bull Arena on Monday night. With the stadium itself being utilized for a youth event, Gotham made due with the space typically reserved for Founders Club season ticket holders.

“I felt bad the team was getting a lot of negative feedback on social media for not having something sooner, but they really did a great job putting something together on short notice,” Eric Fonseca said. “The vibes were on point. Everyone was cheering, clapping, smiling and laughing — good times all around!”

How Rose Lavelle will thrive at Gotham FC – Equalizer Soccer

New York is an artist’s paradise, and for Rose Lavelle, the ball is her paintbrush and the pitch is her canvas.

The Cincinnati native, known for creating magic with the ball at her feet, has made 92 appearances for the U.S. women’s national team scoring 24 goals and notching 21 assists since her debut in 2017 – which was, perhaps serendipitously, at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey, the home of NJ/NY Gotham FC.

“Rose is a really special player, as are a lot of players on our roster, But I think her ability to do the unexpected and to delight her teammates delight the crowd and her effectiveness on the ball is something that would benefit any team,” Gotham general manager Yael Averbuch West told The Equalizer. “There’s a lot she can do for us and we’re hoping that we can do a lot for her as well.”

The decorated midfielder now joins the defending NWSL Champions in the team’s quest for a second title. Lavelle, who became a household name after her championship-securing goal in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, could be just the piece Gotham needs to continue growing its program and keep up in the ever-changing and evolving landscape of the ultra-competitive NWSL.

“For me it just felt like a really great fit in every aspect,” Lavelle said at Gotham’s media day at Rockefeller Center last month. “On the field or off the field, it felt like somewhere I could settle in and be comfortable but also would push me in ways that I probably don’t even know yet but I’m excited to see. It was a really good opportunity for growth and development in every realm of my life.”

Five talking points from Gold Cup-opening win – Equalizer Soccer

Midge Purce with the USWNT

The United States women’s national team kicked off the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup on Tuesday with a 5-0 victory over Dominican Republic. The result was predictable, but the United States’ lineup was not.

Interim head coach Twila Kilgore, with the remote input of impending coach Emma Hayes, rolled out a youthful starting lineup that played in a fluid, aggressive shape. Eighteen-year-old Olivia Moultrie and defender Jenna Nighswonger each scored their first international goals in the comfortable victory.

These are the big talking points from the match.

A refreshing lineup

It was expected that the U.S. would roll out some creative lineups at the Gold Cup, but to get that different of a lineup in the opening match was a pleasant surprise.

With the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup solidly underway, the United States women’s national team has already taken center stage. Despite losing forward Mia Fishel to an ACL tear the day before matches began, the USWNT would go on to defeat the Dominican Republic, 5–0.

United States 5, Dominican Republic 0

The U.S. women’s national team got off to a quick start thanks to 18-year-old Olivia Moultrie, who scored in the eighth minute off an assist from Sophia Smith. It was Moultrie’s first start and first goal for the U.S. In the 30th minute, Midge Purce found Lynn Williams in the box to double the lead.

Purce connected with Moultrie in the 58th and the U.S. added a pair of penalty kicks in the final minutes of the game to extend the lead to 5-0. Jenna Nighswonder scored her first goal and Alex Morgan, who was called up after Fishel’s injury, scored her 122nd career goal. The U.S. dominated offensively with 31 shots and 10 on goal while holding the Dominican Republic to just one shot in the match.

Argentina 0, Mexico 0

An early foul and a missed penalty kick within the opening 10 minutes would come to define the rest of the match, as both teams struggled to take advantage of scoring opportunities. Mexico finished with 16 shot attempts to Argentina’s 3, the former going on the offensive as the second half began.

Despite their efforts, however, a combination of shots off-goal and clean saves by Argentina’s goalkeeper Laurina Oliveros maintained the scoreless draw until the end. The two teams will play again on Friday, with Argentina will taking on the United States, and Mexico facing the Dominican Republic.
