Why Does the Chiefs QB Wear It So High?

Patrick Mahomes doesn’t just have an unorthodox style of play at quarterback. One may not notice, but the Kansas City Chiefs standout has another advantage — involving his helmet.
Patrick Mahomes Noticeably Wears His Helmet Higher Than Others
The two-time Super Bowl champion doesn’t wear the average-size helmet on game days.
He wears a Riddell SpeedFlex on weekends. That helmet is larger than the average NFL helmet.
According to reviews left on the Riddell website, the helmet is considered one of the safer ones to use. Many users have praised how safe the helmet is during contact. The helmet comes equipped with a flexible panel at the front of the equipment, designed to reduce the impact of head contact. There’s also inflatable foam padding.
Mahomes, in all likelihood, wears the extra-large version of the football gear. He has noticeably worn his helmet higher than most quarterbacks and NFL players.
But there’s a reason behind the level Mahomes wears his helmet. He had once complained that his helmet was always slipping down over his eyes on the field. He eventually started to raise his game day gear above his neck higher than usual — but to improve his field vision.
That now explains how Mahomes is able to complete his uncanny no-look throws and hit his targets with pinpoint accuracy.
How Mahomes Has Fared During Much-Anticipated MNF Showdown With Eagles
Mahomes played in one of his more anticipated games of the 2023 Chiefs season Monday: the Super Bowl rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles.
And as Mahomes had the back of his hairs sticking out against the Eagles with his helmet display, did Mahomes do anything that stuck out on the evening?

Then, Mahomes and K.C. went with a simple, yet common, connection. He hit Travis Kelce on a short dumpoff that still resulted in six points.

Mahomes, however, had to find a way to deliver smooth passes through rainy conditions. Overall, he struggled in doing so. The franchise QB for the Chiefs settled for 86 total passing yards through the first eight offensive drives. He completed 11-of-19 passes but averaged just 4.5 yards per play before the fourth quarter and threw one interception.
The Chiefs, however, frustrated the Eagles on defense by sacking Jalen Hurts five times and picking him off once as K.C. led 17-7 through three quarters.

NFL Analyst Emmanuel Acho Believes Jalen Hurts Doesn’t ‘Look the Part’ of an MVP Favorite

The Philadelphia Eagles have the best record in the NFL through Week 12, standing at 10-1. One of the reasons has been Jalen Hurts, who is the current betting favorite to win the NFL MVP Award.
Not everyone believes Hurts should be the favorite, though. NFL analyst Emmanuel Acho doesn’t believe he’s fully looked the part, sharing his opinion on TV this week.
What did he say?
Emmanuel Acho Says Jalen Hurts Hasn’t Looked Like an MVP Favorite
In 2023, Jalen Hurts passed for 2,697 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He has also rushed for 410 yards and 11 touchdowns. This is Hurts’ third year as the starting quarterback for the Eagles.

“Jalen Hurts still doesn’t look the part … I’m watching the game both as an analyst, but I’m also watching as a former football player, and I’m like, ‘Jalen Hurts doesn’t look that good,’ he just doesn’t,” Acho said on Speak, a show that plays on FS1 every week.
“Jalen Hurts still doesn’t look the part… I’m watching the game both as an analyst but I’m also watching as a former football player and I’m like Jalen Hurts doesn’t look that good, he just doesn’t. You look at Josh Allen and you’re like ‘oh my god.’”

Hurts has been in the NFL since 2020 when he was drafted in the second round out of Oklahoma. Since being drafted, he has passed for 10,603 yards, 62 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions. He has also rushed for 2,308 yards and 37 touchdowns.
Hurts, as the favorite, has +150 odds to win MVP, according to FOX Sports. He is ahead of Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott, Lamar Jackson, Tua Tagoailoa, and Brock Purdy, who all have +1400 or better odds.
Mahomes, Prescott, and Tagovailoa all have more passing touchdowns with the same or fewer interceptions. Hurts has the advantage of rushing over each, though.
The Eagles and Hurts have drawn the attention of many with their infamous quarterback sneak, also known as ‘The Brotherly Shove.’ The shove has been responsible for the majority of Hurts’ rushing touchdowns.

Over the offseason, Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million contract, including a $23 million signing bonus with $179 million in guaranteed. He ranks fifth among the highest-paid quarterbacks, in terms of average per year.
Hurts is coming off a performance against the Buffalo Bills in which he had 265 total yards, five total touchdowns, and one interception. The game resulted in an overtime win. The Eagles will now face the San Francisco 49ers, one of the NFL’s best defenses, on Dec. 3.
Though Acho didn’t express full satisfaction in Hurts’ play this season, he did follow it up with some support in a later segment, listing him first on his MVP ballot.

Should You Start Tony Pollard, Kenneth Walker III, or Zach Charbonnet for Fantasy Football Week 13?

Thursday night’s Seattle Seahawks vs. Dallas Cowboys matchup not only has huge playoff implications, but there is probably a lot of debate as to which running back from this game fantasy football managers should start.
We’ll let you know which one is worth starting in your fantasy lineup.
Should You Start Tony Pollard, Kenneth Walker III, or Zach Charbonnet This Week?
In Pro Football Network’s Start/Sit Optimizer, our Consensus Rankings say that Pollard is the player to start. His projected 14.6 points include 54 rushing yards, three receptions, and 25 receiving yards. His projected stat line outperforms the consensus projections of Charbonnet (9.7 points) and Walker (3.8 points).
My ranking for these three running backs aligns with the consensus. Pollard has had back-to-back solid games running the ball, and with the Seahawks ranked in the bottom half of the NFL in defending the run, this looks like the pick among the three.
Fantasy Outlook for Pollard This Week
Pollard rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown last week vs. the Commanders, his highest total in rushing yards since his season-high 122 rushing yards back in Week 3 vs. the Cardinals. He also averaged better than five yards a carry in each of his last two games.

In addition, he’s had 10 total receptions over his last two games, tying his best receptions total in back-to-back games this season. Most importantly for fantasy managers, Pollard has back-to-back games with a touchdown run — his first touchdowns since Week 1.
This, combined with the fact that the Seahawks rank 21st against the run, and the choice at running back among these three for this week appears to be clear.
Fantasy Outlook for Charbonnet This Week
Even before Walker’s oblique injury sidelined him last week, Charbonnet was seeing more time in the backfield. In fact, he’s been on the field for at least 50% of Seattle’s offensive snaps each of the last five games — at least 85% the last two weeks.
The problem is, there just hasn’t been a lot of production from Charbonnet during this stretch. Over the last two weeks, he’s basically been Seattle’s featured back, but all he has to show for it is 94 total yards and less than four yards per carry (3.2).
Even if Charbonnet is the primary ball carrier for the Seahawks this week, I would wait until I see a little more before taking a chance on him. The PFN Start/Sit Optimizer projects Charbonnet to finish with 56 rushing yards, one reception, and five receiving yards.
Fantasy Outlook for Walker This Week
Walker, who missed his first game of the season last week against the 49ers with an oblique injury he suffered against the Rams in Week 11, reportedly did not practice Monday. With another Thursday game on tap this week, there is the possibility that he could miss his second straight game.
This would certainly be a blow to the Seahawks, who certainly could use their leading rusher against the red-hot Cowboys. It’s also a disappointment for fantasy football managers because even if Walker is somehow able to play Thursday, it could be a decision between a healthy Charbonnet and a less than 100% Walker.
The PFN Start/Sit Optimizer projects Walker to finish with 18 rushing yards and one reception for four receiving yards.

‘I Think My S— Popped, My Achilles’ — Gutting Hard Knocks Episode 2 Captures Jaelan Phillips Injury

We all knew how the second episode of Hard Knocks: In Season With the Miami Dolphins would end. But that didn’t make watching the lowest moment of Jaelan Phillips’ NFL career any easier.
The NFL Films camera crew provided a crystal clear look at the moments before, during, and after Phillips suffered a season-ending Achilles’ tendon on Black Friday during an emotional 45 minutes on HBO Tuesday night.
Phillips, the standout third-year Miami Dolphins defender, first experienced disbelief and then gutting grief as he realized his Achilles was torn — an injury that comes with a recovery time of 9-12 month recovery.
“I think my s— popped, my Achilles,” Phillips said as he laid on the field at MetLife Stadium.
Sadly, Phillips was right.
Miami Dolphins’ Jaelan Phillips Focus of Hard Knocks Episode 2
As the gravity of the injury sunk in, Phillips became emotional, and credit NFL Films for handling it with respect.
In fact, the production crew told his entire story well, beginning with his college days, when Phillips briefly retired from football after a series of injuries at UCLA.
The episode correctly pointed out that he was peaking as a professional in Year 3 and even captured Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel telling him pre-game Friday that he’s “about to be a household name after today.”
McDaniel was right — but in a way he never expected.
Hard Knocks recorded Phillips saying, “I want a sack real bad” before making that wish come true — his last big play prior to the injury.
The show also captured Phillips pawing at his right leg literally seconds before the injury, suggesting that something didn’t feel quite right.
In the episode’s final moments, Phillips was seen wheeling into the team’s training room on a medical scooter and broadcast his first on-the-record comments since the injury.
“I was literally just in my stance, doing my get off, when I was pushing off, I felt like someone was stepping on me,” Phillips said.

When he looked back and saw no one there, he knew something was seriously wrong.
“It was just disbelief,” Phillips said. “I was feeling on the top of the world. I was balling out.”
“These last couple of weeks, I’ve felt like I’ve had the most confidence” in his career, he continued.
Phillips added that watching footage of his teammates surrounding him in concern on the field meant a lot. Dan Marino consoled his mother after the game.
“They were there for not just me, but my family as well,” he said.
“When this is all said and done, this is going to make me a stronger person because of it,” Phillips added. “I’m just trying to keep that positive mindset and start to attack rehab. Yeah, it’s going to be a long process, but I just know I’m a fighter. I’m going to keep fighting.”
This was an awesome moment, Jaelan Phillips appreciated all the love the team showed him & his family 🫡🫶 #FinsUp pic.twitter.com/CjPVWaBoDj
