Magic Johnson shuts down Steph Curry’s best-ever point guard claim

For over three decades, Magic Johnson has been the undisputed greatest point guard of all time. Even though the Lakers legend had a short career due to health issues, he was still able to conquer it all in his 13-year NBA career. However, last month Stephen Curry reignited the debate when he was asked the question and placed himself at the top of the ranks.

It is true that the Warriors superstar is the main reason why the San Francisco franchise has been the most successful NBA club in the past decade, conquering four titles since 2014. At the top, only LeBron James stands beside him as the best players in this modern era.

Even though Curry demonstrated nothing but respect towards Johnson, he genuinely believed he’d surpassed him as the best point guard in NBA history. The LA legend recently went on “CBS Sports Radio” will Zach Gelb and shut down the Golden State star’s claims.

“If he got more than five championships. If he got more than three Finals MVPs and three league MVPs, then he’s the greatest. If he’s got more number one in assists all-time in the Finals, number two in double-doubles, number one in triple-doubles all-time in the NBA playoffs, number four in steals all-time in the playoffs. If he’s got more than those numbers, he’s the best,” Magic said on air. “I’m just saying if he’s got more than all those things then he’s the best, but the last time I checked, he doesn’t. But everyone has to decide for themselves who the best it.”

If you play the numbers game, then Johnson is correct. However, Curry is 35-years-old and still going strong, as he recently said he wanted to play as long as LeBron James has, who’s 38 at the moment. This means, we probably have three more years of witnessing the Warriors guard’s greatness and could reach Magic’s stats.

Let’s look back at exactly what Curry said when he was interviewed by Gilbert Arenas in August. The former Wizards star asked him the question directly, and he bluntly answered “yes.”

Then, after thinking about it for a minute, the Golden State leader accepted that it was a complicated conversation, especially considering Magic’s career, but that this is precisely why these debates are so fun to engage in.

“I obviously had to answer that way,” he continued. “But I really feel like, to your point, Magic’s résumé is ridiculous. so the fact that we are even having this conversation is a place I never thought I’d be. But the fact, to your point and how you grade it, this is why we have these conversations because it’s fun.”

Magic also shared his excitement for this Lakers roster, considering it the ‘most balanced team in the West’ ahead of next season

The Hall of Famer believe that the purple and gold are back to being the best team in the Western Conference, and praises Rob Pelinka and the administration for turning things around after last campaign’s poor start.

“This season, I think that the Lakers are going to win the West and get back – they could win another championship,” Johnson expressed. “I think they’re the best team in the West. Rob Pelinka has done a great job – him and Jeanie Buss – of not only keeping the young talent but also bringing in some really great free agents.

“I think the Lakers are probably the most balanced team in the West. And have – I believe – the most talent too. They’re the deepest team.”

The Los Angeles legend also dug into the acquisition of LeBron James back in the 2019/20 season, and recognizes how he inspired the team to win the NBA title that year.

“I was so excited that we got back to that level,” Magic said. “That we won, even though it was in the bubble, we still won the championship. … It was a great championship for the Lakers.”

NBA legend Kevin Garnett revealed he plans to ‘dedicate’ a son to Kobe Bryant

The Celtics and Lakers are the most successful franchises in NBA history and have held the most fierce rivalry for many decades. Two of their most important icons, Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant, always celebrated a strong friendship despite their team’s history. 

In a recent interview on Stephen A. Smith’s podcast, the Boston legend revealed that he wishes to put their long-standing rivalry aside and someday dedicate a son to his late friend. Garnett always spoke highly of Bryant, and admitted he’s always admired him since day one.

“When he hit that floor, he knew what it was and I loved him for it. I miss Kobe every day, man,” Kevin shared. “I look up and we celebrate him like he’s still alive, and I love that. If I have a son someday, I don’t know when and where, but I’mma dedicate a son to Kobe, man.”

The 47-year-old first entered the league a year before Kobe did, straight out of high school. Both legends clashed against each other in numerous occasions throughout their careers, but probably faced their most crucial battle during the 2008 and 2009 NBA Finals. While the Celtics won the first one, the Lakers got their revenge the next year.

“When I actually met Kobe he was a real kid,” the ex-Wolves star said. “We were both kids. I saw when he was nervous, when he was a human being, and when we would cry … We were gullible about [the NBA] and we wanted it so bad. That was my bro.”

Tragedy came over the Bryant family almost four years ago, when both Kobe, his daughter Gianna and seven other people died in a helicopter crash in California.

“The passing of Kobe and all of us getting older helped me understand that life is not given to none of us. It would have fu**** with me if something were to happen to Ray, and I didn’t get the chance to amend this,” KG told Kevin Hart sometime ago on his show Cold as Balls.

Back in 2007, Boston formed one of the most famous Big Threes in league history with Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, who led the franchise to their first NBA trophy since Larry Bird. However, once they were champs, they parted ways and created conflict between them.

On his same interview on “The Stephen A. Show”, Kevin shared some thoughts on the reasons behind his quarrel with his former teammates.

 

“I took that so personal because out of the places you could have, you could have went to L.A., you could have went to another team. You went to the one team you knew that we was beefing with. You knew that was a reel beef with us, bro,” said the Hall of Famer.

Garnett explained that the real problem started when Allen decided to join the Miami Heat, which has always been one of the Celtics’ biggest rivals.

Nets’ Cam Thomas (ankle) probable vs. Hornets after 9 games out

Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas has been upgraded to probable for Thursday night’s home game against the Charlotte Hornets. Thomas, 22, has missed the last night games due to a left ankle sprain.

A team source confirmed Brooklyn’s leading scorer will be on a minutes restriction, according to Brian Lewis of the New York Post. An MRI earlier this month confirmed the sprain.

The Nets went 5-4 without Thomas and finished 11th in offensive rating (116.9) in his absence. The LSU product suffered the injury during the third quarter of Brooklyn’s 100-93 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Nov. 8.

Per a few NBA betting sites, the Brooklyn Nets hold 24th-ranked odds to win this season’s championship. Sportsbooks are showing better odds for the Atlanta Hawks, Indiana Pacers, and Orlando Magic.

Thomas stepped awkwardly nearby defender PJ Tucker while driving to the basket, resulting in a tripping personal foul. The 6-foot-4 guard scored 14 points on 6-of-14 (42.9%) shooting in 20 minutes before exiting against L.A.

Prior to his injury, Thomas was averaging a team-high 26.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 32.4 minutes per game through eight appearances. Plus, he was shooting 47.9% from the field and 32.1% beyond the arc.

Spencer Dinwiddie has carried the team during the absences of Thomas and Ben Simmons. Over his last nine games with the two players sidelined, Dinwiddie ranks 11th in the NBA in assists (7.3 per game). His assist-turnover ratio is 3.84.

Only four players have a better assist-turnover ratio during that span. Those players are Fred VanVleet (7.61), Mike Conley (5.46), Chris Paul (5.14), and Tyrese Haliburton (5.0).

For the rest of Brooklyn’s injury report, Simmons (hip) remains out indefinitely, guard Dennis Smith Jr. (back) is questionable, and forward Noah Clowney (shoulder) has been downgraded to out against Charlotte.

NBA sportsbooks show the Nets as 8.5-point favorites at home over the Hornets.
