Analyzing Steelers Best and Worst Case Scenarios

It’s NFL prediction season. Now that the schedule is out, the draft is completed, and offseason workouts are beginning, this is the best time to evaluate your favorite team’s chances before the games begin. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, all hopes reside on the development of quarterback Kenny Pickett. He showed some promise as a rookie and helped the Steelers avoid the first losing season in head coach Mike Tomlin’s 16 years in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers again brought an outstanding defense to the table in 2022. It will need to remain in top form for them to advance and make the postseason. T.J. Watt only played in 10 games in 2022. To compete in the AFC North, they will need as much of him as they can get. Here are the best and worst-case scenarios for the Steelers’ 2023 season.

Predicting the Best-Case Scenario for the Steelers’ 2023 NFL Season

Pickett finishing as a top-16 quarterback would be the best-case scenario for the Steelers. Sure, you would love to sit there and say, “best case is he’s the best in the league.”

The reality is that he has much too far a climb even to be a top-10 quarterback in 2023. But if he can finish in the top half of starters, that would be a huge step forward for the offense.

In 2022, Pickett finished 30th out of 34 qualifying quarterbacks in yards per game, and he finished 24th in completion percentage. In 13 games played, he threw for only seven touchdowns and nine interceptions.

While he had flashes of really good playmaking, he truly struggled in his rookie year. In eight consecutive starts beginning in Week 5, the Pickett-led Steelers scored only .46 points per minute of possession time. If carried out over the course of a full season, that would be the second-worst rate in the entire NFL.

Yet, the Steelers still won nine games. If they can improve just a bit, and get that offense into the top half of the league, they would drastically improve their season outcome with the defense they have.

In a best-case scenario, Pickett takes a big jump in his development, and the Steelers are in the postseason.

Predicting the Worst-Case Scenario for the Steelers’ 2023 NFL Season

Watt is as valuable a player to his team as any player in football. Not having him for an extended period of time in 2023 would be a worst-case scenario for the Steelers and would certainly doom their season.

When Watt is on the field, they are one of the five best defenses in football at preventing opponents from scoring efficiently. When he is not on the field, they are among the worst.

In 2022, Watt missed Weeks 2-9. During that stretch, The Steelers surrendered .82 points per minute of opponent possession time. If carried out for a full season, that would be the fourth-worst rate in the league.

With him on the field, that score prevention rate dropped by nearly 35%. They gave up only .55 points per minute of possession time. If that had been carried out for a full season, they would have been tied for the best in all of football.

That’s how important Watt is. An entire unit goes from first to worst if he misses time. If Pickett doesn’t develop as hoped and gives similar production to what he did in 2022, the loss of Watt would prove catastrophic for the Steelers’ season.

They would not only miss the playoffs but likely pick in the top five of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Beckham was previously with long-term girlfriend Lauren Wood, of which the two have a son together. Rumors are circulating that Beckham left Wood for Kardashian. Is this the first time Beckham has been connected to a Kardashian? Not quite.

Rumor has it that the Baltimore receiver previously dated Kim’s sister Khloe. This is the second Kardashian on Beckham’s dating bingo card. How does Khloe feel about Kim dating her ex? How does the social media world feel about the union between these two stars?

What Does Social Media Think of the Kim Kardashian/Odell Beckham Jr. Dating Rumors?

Many on the social media platforms have intimated Kim is picking up her sister’s ‘sloppy seconds.’

Some on social media describe the dating rumor and the family dynamics as “weird” and “gross”.

Some on social media questioned why Beckham Jr. would be after Kardashian, stating many women would be interested in the Ravens receiver and he doesn’t need to be with someone with a storied dating history like Kim.

Some on social media are already clamoring for the two to break up.

Should I Trade Kyle Pitts in Fantasy Football?

Atlanta Falcons TE Kyle Pitts was one of the most anticipated rookie players to enter the NFL in the past five years. A physical specimen, Pitts seemed like the next great tight end that fantasy football managers would love to have.

Just over two years into his career, Pitts has not quite performed as advertised. Is his breakout coming in 2023 or will the tight end’s value continue to dip? If you have Pitts, should you consider selling? Let’s take a look and find out!

Should Fantasy Football Managers Trade Kyle Pitts?

Pitts is an extraordinarily gifted athlete. When he entered the NFL, he was drafted fourth overall, which was higher than any tight end in NFL history. To say he was a promising prospect would be putting it lightly.

Having this hype around him led to Pitts being drafted highly in fantasy drafts his rookie year. Two years into his career, though, Pitts has failed to fully break out as an elite tight end for fantasy football managers.

While still being the same gifted athlete that he was when he entered the NFL, Pitts is still not a top target in the Falcons’ offense. Game planning around Pitts has never been a priority, and the games where Pitts finds success are few and far between. In his first two years in the league, Pitts has only eclipsed 10 fantasy points in a week (0.5 PPR) five times.

This raises the question: Is Pitts a player that fantasy managers should be trying to sell in their leagues? In a dynasty format, Pitts is still young and very capable of having many successful years to come. Still, one of the concerns that fantasy managers have is that head coach Arthur Smith and the Falcons’ coaching staff do not seem to want to utilize his talents.

The Falcons run a very balanced offense that sees many players getting targets, as well as a strong running game that is utilized to manage time of possession. While this could change in the future, Smith and the Falcons are currently 2-0 this season. They also play in the NFC South — one of the worst divisions in football.

If the Falcons were to find themselves in the playoffs this season, you could expect that Smith and the rest of the Falcons’ coaching staff will remain with the team for at least one more season. This has to be concerning to fantasy managers who have not been happy with how Pitts has been utilized. If Smith and the Falcons coaches are going to remain with the team, will the former Florida Gator be able to fully break out while he’s still young?

For this reason, I am certainly floating Pitts’ name out on the trade block in my leagues,  but what should we be willing to accept in a deal for him?

What Should Fantasy Managers Look To Acquire When Trading Pitts?

Pitts is turning 23 years old in October. He is young, talented, and has much of his career ahead of him. We shouldn’t be selling him for pennies on the dollar.

If you are a team that wants to compete, finding a tight end to replace Pitts would be worthwhile. Managers with T.J. Hockenson probably have their tight end ranked over Pitts at this point, so you’ll need to add a little extra onto your end of the deal to acquire the Minnesota Vikings’ tight end.

If we aren’t looking to upgrade Pitts, we could definitely refresh the cycle on youth. Detroit Lions TE Sam LaPorta has already shown he has some talent in his first two career games. It is possible that the LaPorta manager would be willing to move the rookie and a second-round pick to get the lottery ticket on Pitts? You could also kick the tires on another rookie in Buffalo Bills TE Dalton Kincaid.

For win-now managers trying to acquire youth, Evan Engram could be of interest. In a year and two weeks with the Jaguars, Engram has totaled over 80 receptions, 870 yards, and four touchdowns. In a high-powered offense in Jacksonville, Engram is involved and able to consistently score for his fantasy managers.

Putting tight ends completely aside, here are a few players around Pitts’ value that I’d be willing to move the tight end for in a straight-up deal:

  • Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs
  • New England Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson
  • Green Bay Packers WR Christian Watson
  • Indianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr.

Right now, I have concerns that Pitts’ value will continue to diminish unless the Falcons’ philosophy changes significantly. Moving Pitts and getting good value now might feel like you are selling low, but by the end of this season — or in 2024 — it could feel like a steal.
