Former HC Reuniting With Derek Carr in New Orleans?

After an unceremonious departure from the NFL in 2021, former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden is reportedly helping the New Orleans Saints. According to Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com, Gruden spent time with Saints quarterback Derek Carr and the offensive coaching staff at the team’s facility.
What Happened to Jon Gruden?
Gruden has had quite the fall from grace in recent years, which ultimately ended in him being forced to resign as head coach of the Raiders in 2021. While Gruden has a well-documented history of being a talented offensive mind and Super Bowl-winning head coach, it’s fair to question if he deserves another chance in the NFL.
Despite his accolades in both the NFL and as a member of the media, Gruden ruined his reputation when emails that included racist and homophobic remarks surfaced that were sent between 2011 and 2018.

Unfortunately, in the world of sports, opportunities will still present themselves if a player or coach is deemed talented enough to warrant another chance.
Apparently, the Saints are the team that is ready to give Gruden another chance. While he doesn’t have an official title with the Saints, it’s clear that New Orleans values Gruden as an offensive mind and his experience working with Carr from their days together with the Raiders. But is this the right move for the Saints to make?
Are the Saints Making a Mistake by Talking to Jon Gruden?
There’s an old saying that says time heals all wounds … but that likely isn’t the case with Gruden. What was said by the former NFL head coach in those leaked emails was tough to read, and it’s fair to wonder if people will ever forgive Gruden.
Yet, the Saints are apparently willing to live with the repercussions of asking Gruden for help as they install their offensive scheme with Carr as their starting quarterback.
MORE: Should Antonio Brown Make the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame?
Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com mentioned that the team hosted Gruden this week to pick his brain:
“To facilitate the transition, the Saints signed two of Carr’s old Raiders targets in free agency: wide receiver Bryan Edwards and tight end Foster Moreau. The club also brought in Gruden this week to pick his brain about the offensive transition. The longtime head coach spent much of his time at the Saints facility with Carr and the offensive coaching staff as they orchestrated the early stages of the offensive installation.”
It’s fair to wonder if the Saints even wanted it known publicly that they allowed Gruden in their team facility. Obviously, this will raise questions about Saints head coach Dennis Allen and the confidence that he has in his current offensive coaching staff. There are also questions about Gruden’s past and the meaning behind those emails.
While the Saints likely just wanted some input from Gruden due to his experience with Carr, it’s not an ideal look for the organization. As they transition into a new era with Carr at quarterback, New Orleans should look to avoid any issues, such as the idea of working with a controversial former head coach.

What Teams Did New York Jets Quarterback Tim Boyle Play For?

Tim Boyle won’t be spending Black Friday 2023 fighting for a smart TV or video game console at an electronics store. Instead, the NFL journeyman quarterback managed to fight his way to a starting position with the New York Jets.
Boyle has worked his way up the roster on a team that originally lured in Super Bowl-winner Aaron Rodgers and then had past No. 2 overall pick Zack Wilson handling the reins before being benched. But before the starting debut of his ’23 season comes on the day after Thanksgiving, what were the other NFL addresses attached to Boyle before he became QB1 for the holidays?
Teams Tim Boyle Suited Up For
Long story short, outside of the Jets, Boyle suited up for everyone in the NFC North except for the Minnesota Vikings.
And it all began in Wisconsin for the Hartford, Conn., native.
Boyle went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft but was picked up by the Green Bay Packers that May. That was during a time when Rodgers was still the franchise quarterback. He eventually impressed the Packers enough to become the third QB behind Rodgers and his backup DeShone Kizer.

But Boyle didn’t see much action behind center for the Packers. He took three straight knees during an Oct. 2019 game versus the Oakland Raiders. He managed to get more action on Nov. 24, 2019, in a more one-sided loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He ended up going 3-of-4 passing for just 15 yards that day.
He left the Packers as an unrestricted free agent after the 2020 season. He eventually signed with the Detroit Lions on March 22, 2021. He went on to start in three games that season.
In his NFL debut, he was limited to 77 yards in the 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns. He didn’t start again until Dec. 26, as he faced the Atlanta Falcons. He went 24-of-34 passing for 187 yards in the 20-16 loss. Boyle was given one more start the following week. But that ended in a 51-29 Seattle Seahawks romp, as Boyle settled for 22-of-37 passing for 262 yards.
Boyle tossed three touchdowns with six interceptions. In 2022, he spent most of the season on the practice squad before landing with the Chicago Bears in November.
He’s been with the Jets since April 6, 2023, as he signed a free-agent deal before being added to the practice squad. Now, he’s gone from undrafted to the practice squad to handling the reins for a team once all in on Rodgers and Wilson.
How Confident is Boyle Ahead of 2023 Debut?
Think fighting through long lines and large crowds at 5 a.m. on Black Friday is tough? Try preparing for an AFC contender in the Miami Dolphins on this day.
That’s exactly what Boyle has to do on the day after Thanksgiving.
But how confident is the journeyman passer before he takes on an aspiring Super Bowl team? Speaking with reporters on Tuesday ahead of the rare Friday showdown, Boyle shared where his confidence level is.
“I am right where I should be right now. I believe in myself, and other teams have believed in me, and that is truthfully all that matters,” Boyle told New York reporters. “Accountability is No. 1 at quarterback, and I didn’t play well in college, but here I am in Year 6 in the NFL.”
As for what elements he brings to the Jets offense, Boyle gave this short scouting report on himself.
“I feel like I have enough,” Boyle said. “I can get the ball out on time and make all the throws. I can see [from] the pocket and be a good quarterback for this team. So that is what I intend to do.”
The Jets will need those traits from him as they turn to their third QB option this season, all in an effort to keep their slim playoff hopes alive at 4-6 overall.

What Channel Is the NFL Game Today? Dolphins and Jets Go Head-to-Head on Black Friday in Week 12

After a three-game slate on Thanksgiving, the early football fun continues with the NFL‘s first-ever game on Black Friday, with the Miami Dolphins heading to MetLife Stadium for an AFC East tilt against the New York Jets.
When and where can you watch the NFL game today? Here’s the NFL Black Friday game channel, start time, and more for the showdown between the Dolphins and Jets.
What Channel Airs the NFL Game Today?
The Dolphins and Jets make NFL history by playing in the first Black Friday game ever scheduled. Why did the NFL schedule a game on Black Friday?
After striking a deal to become the home of Thursday Night Football, Amazon Prime has taken over broadcasting duties, except Thanksgiving when the usual trio of CBS, FOX, and NBC air the games. With Prime being the odd one out on Thanksgiving, the NFL decided to have another game on Friday to let Prime air a game in Week 12.

Miami and New York will kick off at 3 p.m. ET on Prime Video today. However, the game will be available to anyone with an Amazon account, even those without Amazon Prime.
Miami Dolphins at New York Jets
- Start time: 3 p.m. ET
- Channel: Prime Video
While Miami hopes to get their offense on track after some subpar weeks, the Jets significantly changed their offensive personnel this week. New York’s offense has been abysmal under QB Zach Wilson this year. While not intending to start the third-year QB this year, the Achilles’ injury to Aaron Rodgers forced him back under center sooner than anticipated.
While not the worst, the Jets have the third-lowest scoring offense this season, averaging just 15 points a game. They are struggling to string together enough plays to make it past the 50-yard line.
Since Week 8, the Jets are running 27.7% of their offensive plays on the opponent’s side of the field and 5.1% of plays in the red zone — the worst in the NFL. On the other hand, the Dolphins have allowed opponents to run 31.5% of their plays in their territory, the best in the league.
With New York’s offense showing no improvement under Wilson, head coach Robert Saleh benched the former BYU QB, leaving Tim Boyle to start today.
MORE: Best of Luck, Tim Boyle
Boyle has been in the league for five years but has only started in three games. He went 0-3 for the Detroit Lions in 2021, throwing for 526 yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions.
While Saleh is hoping Boyle can provide more of a spark than Wilson, it will still take a massive effort to keep up with a Dolphins offense that could only score 20 points and easily win. Gaining momentum and sustaining drives is the goal for the Jets until Rodgers returns under center.
2023 Week 12 Schedule
With four games getting out of the way early, who else plays in Week 12? While no teams are on a bye, the four-game slate between Thanksgiving and Black Friday shortens the rest of the schedule to just 12 matchups. Here’s the rest of the 2023 Week 12 schedule.

Should You Start Khalil Herbert, D’Onta Foreman, or Roschon Johnson in Fantasy Football in Week 12?

The Chicago Bears‘ running game was once again mostly about quarterback Justin Fields, as he gained 104 of their 183 rushing yards in last week’s loss to the Detroit Lions.
So, is there a running back to start in Chicago among their big three of Khalil Herbert, D’Onta Foreman, and Roschon Johnson?
We’ll let you know which one is worth starting in your fantasy football lineup.
Should You Start Khalil Herbert, D’Onta Foreman, or Roschon Johnson This Week?
In the Pro Football Network Start/Sit Optimizer, our Consensus Rankings say that Herbert is the player to start. His projected 7.7 points include 45 rushing yards, one reception, and five receiving yards. His projected stat line outperforms the consensus projection of Johnson (5.4 points) and Foreman (5.3 points).
My ranking for these three Bears running backs aligns with the consensus. Herbert should go back to looking like his old self in the backfield, and if he does, that will produce better numbers for fantasy football managers than the numbers from Foreman or Johnson.
Fantasy Outlook for Herbert This Week
In horse racing, handicappers sometimes look at a quality thoroughbred making his second start off a long layoff as a reason to pick him (or her) to win.
The same handicapping philosophy could apply to Herbert this week.
MORE: PFN’s FREE NFL Playoff Predictor
After missing five games with an injury, Herbert returned to the lineup last week and was unimpressive against the Detroit Lions, rushing for only 35 yards and 2.2 yards per carry.
But, assuming he’s healthy, Herbert was too good of a running back before his injury — 179 rush yards combined in two games before the injury — to simply abandon him after one game back. Yes, the Minnesota Vikings do have one of the best rush defenses — seventh in rush defense, allowing 94.0 rush YPG — but I’m more concerned with Herbert than the opponent.
If he’s healthy, and there’s no reason to suspect otherwise, he should get the start in fantasy lineups over Foreman or Johnson.
Fantasy Outlook for Foreman This Week
Health is the biggest factor working against Foreman right now. He left last week’s game with an ankle injury and did not practice Thursday because of the injury. While there is an extra day to get healthy enough to play Monday night, this is an issue at the moment.
The shame of it all is that Foreman had back-to-back games with at least 80 rushing yards before last week’s game versus the Detroit Lions, so we were just seeing some production from the running back position that didn’t involve Herbert.
But the injury situation makes it tough to support starting Foreman over these other two running backs this week.
The PFN Start/Sit Optimizer projects Foreman to finish with 36 rushing yards, one reception, and six receiving yards.
Fantasy Outlook for Johnson This Week
Should Foreman not be able to play Monday, Johnson’s situation would suddenly look a lot different. He would essentially be going from the odd man out in a trio of running backs to the backup to a player only one game back from his injury.
Johnson continues to get time on the field, playing in 25 offensive snaps last week, although Foreman’s injury in the game probably afforded him a few more plays on the field. He is still averaging 4.5 yards a carry on the season but still has yet to receive double-digit carries in any game this season.
The PFN Start/Sit Optimizer projects Johnson to finish with 28 rushing yards and two receiving yards.
