PHILADELPHIA — The sensation of deja vu washed over many of the Penn veterans. A Quaker batted ball firing down the left field line during a battle for the Ivy League championship, its destiny to be determined by the left or right arm of the third base umpire. 

Senior first baseman Ben Miller tracked the ball from the on-deck circle last year and like many Quakers was in disbelief when Andrew Hernandez’ potential game-tying three-run homer against Columbia was ruled to be foul. AUBURN, Ala. — The matchup between Samford righthander Jacob Cravey and Southern Miss righthander Tanner Hall, the pitchers of the year in the SoCon and Sun Belt, respectively, was one of the best pitching matchups on the board for Friday’s opening day of regionals. 

And it lived up to every bit of the pregame hype in a contest that Samford eventually won 4-2 in 10 innings to advance to Saturday evening’s winners’ bracket. 

Hall came into the game with more pedigree and name recognition, but there was really very little daylight between the two starting pitchers statistically.

Some takeaways from the early action ….

* We said earlier this week that NC State would be a dangerous team to watch in NCAA Regional action this weekend. Well, the Pack began the postseason impressive fashion with a 5-1 win over No. 2 seed Campbell. Logan Whitaker struck out four in 4.1 shutout innings and Justin Lawson was terrific out of the bullpen with 3.1 shutout innings.

* Man, how about those Indiana State Sycamores? Many around the country bashed on the committee for letting the Sycs host despite having a Top 10 RPI. However,[…]
