Gamble Wins 26th California Women’s Championship by Five Strokes at Ojai
Madelyn Gamble of Pleasant Hill captured the 26th California Women’s Championship by five strokes over Sienna Lyford of Roseville and UC Irvine, Kate Villegas of Arcadia and UC Riverside, and Jensen Jalufka of Austin, Texas, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at Ojai Valley Inn and Spa in Ojai.
Gamble, a sophomore at Washington State who won the 2020 Northern California Golf Association Junior Championship, carded a score of 67-72-71—210, 3-under-par, and was the only player to break par over the 54 holes.
The 19-year-old Gamble led almost from wire-to-wire, collecting seven birdies in her opening 67, and she made three birdies on the last four holes on the front nine in each of the last two rounds to hold onto her lead.
Lyford finished a 75-70-70—215, while Villegas wound up at 74-70-71—215, and Jalufka shot 73-69-73—215.
Abigail Leighton of Santa Rosa and UC Davis was fifth at 73-72-72—217, while Gianna Singh of Elk Grove posted a score of 74-73-71—218 to tie for sixth with Caroline Wales of La Quinta and Kansas University, who finished at 74-70-74—218, while Samantha Bruce of the Philippines and Seattle University was eighth at 74-73-72—219.
Sammy Lee of San Ramon and San Diego State wound up at 72-76-72—220 to tie for 10th with Andrea Gomez Ortizibarra of Aptos and San Diego State, who came in at 71-75-74—220.
Joy Robinson of Pebble Beach, who captured the 2021 California Senior Women’s Championship, won the Senior Division with a score of 77-81-73—231, while Corey Weworski of Carlsbad was second at 77-76-79—232, followed by Patricia Cornett of Mill Valley at 80-79-77—236.
Tina Barker of Fairfield shot 78-84-75—237 to tie for fourth with Julie Wirth of Lafayette, who finished at 82-77-78—237, while Hae Young Kim of San Jose was sixth at 78-80-81—239, followed by Mary Budke of Palm Springs at 79-83-78—240.
Pam Fadel of Pebble Beach was eighth at 87-77-77—241, followed by Melissa Spencer of Santa Cruz at 81-83-79—243, and Jacqueline Bowman of Los Angeles at 83-82-79—244.
Former winners of the California Women’s Championship include Natalie Gulbis, Charlotte Myorkas, Erica Blasberg, Jenna Daniels, Emily Talley, Stephanie Lau, Emily Childs, Jennifer Osborn, Diane Irvin, Jeon Min Park, Jennifer Bermingham, Samantha Hutchison, Katherine Zhu, Leigh Chen and Elli Gordon last year.
