Ann Webber – Ganmain Golf Club

Published

As every golfer knows, the game’s appeal isn’t always about pristine fairways and greens and perfect conditions. We love golf for the personal challenge to improve and especially for the fun times outside in the fresh air with our friends.

Our women’s golf featured player is Ann Webber who lives near Wagga, a regional city in New South Wales, Australia. Ann mainly plays at the Ganmain Golf Club with her regular fun group of Karen, Leonie and Janelle. Ganmain Golf Club like other clubs in areas without ready access to lots of water for irrigation has oiled sand greens rather than the grass surfaces that most golfers enjoy putting on.

Ann started playing golf in 1982 when she was working at the local post office doing deliveries in the mornings and sorting later in the afternoons. “I had a couple of hours to spare so my partner who was a baker and had afternoons off and I would go to our local course and play 9 holes most days. Sometimes if I finished early enough we could get 18 in“.

To Ann, golf means meeting new people, playing different courses and facing the personal challenges the game throws up; “It can be frustrating at times but you soon forget the bad shots when you hit a really good one. My husband and I have recently become Community Instructors, and have had a couple of clinics with local kids. Lots of fun for us all”.

Asked what she was currently working on, Ann said “I’m not a very confident pitch shot player, there was a video showing the flop shot not long ago that has given me a little bit more confidence”.

The game also has great opportunities for travel. “We both retired 6 years ago and have discovered golf holidays. So far we’ve been to South Africa twice, Bavaria, Spain and Portugal, Vietnam and played golf in Perth, Margaret River and Victoria here in Australia. We’ve met some wonderful new friends who are at the same stage in their lives as us. There were some beautiful courses in Austria, Eichenheim was amazing, it’s very hard to play good golf when all you want to do is look at the alps and the cows with bells on.

Fancourt in South Africa is lovely, and the Montague course, designed by Gary Player is South Africa’s version of Augusta. We had an Australia v Fancourt members competition on the Links course there followed by a South African Braai. I have so many wonderful memories!“.

Thank you so much Ann for letting me feature your story with our readers from all over the world.

How to Play From a Downhill Lie

Published

Do you struggle when playing from a downhill lie?

In my opinion, the downhill lie is one of the trickier uneven lies to play from.

Getting good solid contact with the golf ball on a downhill lie means matching your body lines to the slope of the hill.

Here’s how to set up:

First, Match your shoulders, your hips, and your knees to that downslope so that your club can sweep down the hill.

Next, take a couple of practice swings to see where relative to your feet, does the club make contact with the grass. That contact point is likely to be further back than you would have with a normal flat stance. So take your address with the ball back towards your back foot and expect a lower ball flight as a result.

So remember, to make solid contact with the ball when you have got a downhill lie, match your shoulders, hips, and knees to the slope, and take your address with the ball exactly at the point in your stance where your practice swings made contact with the grass.

And … Swing normally.
