Determining Davante Adams’ value as a 2022 free agent

The Green Bay Packers’ season clearly didn’t end the way they wanted. However, Davante Adams cemented his reputation as one of the league’s best wide receivers by any metric. As a result, he is the biggest free agent on the market in 2022. Let’s look back at this most recent season to see what Adams’ team, new or otherwise, will be getting.

Davante Adams proved his greatness this season

At 29, Adams had one of the best seasons of his impressive career. He was one of the most productive receivers in the NFL, benefiting from (and contributing heavily to) Aaron Rodgers’ MVP campaign.

His box score was spectacular; in the regular season, he totaled 1,553 receiving yards (a career high and third in the NFL) and 11 touchdowns, which ranked fifth. He also added 90 yards in the Packers‘ only playoff game.

Adams couldn’t compete with Cooper Kupp, who had a truly historic season. Still, he was nonetheless one of the most statistically successful wide receivers in the NFL.

Davante Adams also had excellent advanced metrics

Unlike some players, Adams’ advanced metrics confirm what his box score suggests.

As evidence, let’s turn to the Offensive Value Metric (OVM). The OVM is a grading system created by the (Bx) Movement to measure how much of a player’s statistical production they were actually responsible for.

This season, Adams earned an OVM grade of 36.12, which ranked fifth in the NFL among the 98 qualifying wide receivers.

Having such a high grade while also being exceptionally productive suggests that Adams was highly efficient in creating his statistics. Even in a 2022 free agent class with several excellent wide receivers, it’s hard to argue that Adams isn’t the best of them.

Examining Adams’ weekly grades

To help us gain a deeper understanding of Adams’ OVM grade from this past season, let’s examine how his performances changed on a weekly basis.

You can see his grades from each week of the season in the chart below, marked by the black dots. For comparison, the yellow line represents the average grade for wide receivers during the regular season.

Adams was exceptionally consistent. More importantly, he was consistently excellent, with only two grades below the league average. Interestingly, Adams didn’t have any particularly exceptional performances. Obviously, he had quite a few high grades, his best being a 46.6-point performance in Week 6.

But, despite there being quite a few receivers in the NFL who couldn’t even dream of getting a grade that high, it only ranked 32nd among all grades earned by wide receivers last season. Adams never had any of the truly exceptional performances we saw from other receivers this season, many of which were produced by players who aren’t anywhere near Adams’ level.

However, his lack of high grades also means that his impressive overall grade resulted from consistency rather than being boosted by extreme outliers. That’s something you don’t often see in the NFL.

The numbers behind Adams’ grades

Adams’ weekly grades speak to his reliability. However, if we want to understand why his grades are so high, we need to look at the statistics involved in calculating those grades. Adams performed well across the board, though he didn’t excel in any particular category. His best statistic was his catch percentage — he caught 72.78% of his targets, 11th among qualifying wide receivers.

And he did so despite being given a meager amount of cushion when targeted. At 5.3 yards on average, the number is tied with several other receivers at 81st in the league.

Even with the consistent defensive pressure, Adams averaged 2.9 yards of separation, ranking in the middle of the pack (tied at 46th). That’s not a particularly impressive number on its own, but in context, it is exceptional.

Adams’ worst statistic, his ability to create yardage after catching the ball, was still better than many other receivers in the NFL. He averaged 5.4 yards after the catch, ranking 22nd in the league. According to the NFL’s projections, that number was 0.6 yards above expectations (tied for 38th).

As with his weekly grades, Adams’ advanced statistics show consistency, not peaks and valleys.

Wherever Adams ends up, he will have an impact

Where Adams plays next season will likely depend less on his own skill and more on outside factors. Particularly, Aaron Rodgers’ plans are the ultimate fork in the road.

As good as Adams is, without Rodgers, Green Bay will likely go into rebuilding mode. In that case, paying Adams an enormous sum of money doesn’t make much sense.

In that case, their loss will be another team’s gain. Adams is one of the NFL’s best players. Any franchise looking to make a Super Bowl run should be willing to give the 2022 free agent the contract he wants and deserves.

Every Record Set by Miami Dolphins vs. the Denver Broncos

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins didn’t have a once-a-generation game Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

They had a once-a-half-century game — and maybe even that might be selling them short.

In addition to putting a scare into the NFL’s single-game record for points scored and yards gained, they broke or tied a staggering 13 franchise records, per the team’s postgame notes compiled by Brett Brecheisen, the team’s excellent senior manager of football communications.

Those 13 records set or tied (including the postseason) are:

  • Most points in a game in team history: 70
  • Most touchdowns in a game in team history: 10
  • Most total yards in a game in team history: 726
  • Most rushing yards in a game in team history: 350
  • Most points scored in the second half of a game in team history: 35*
  • Most PATs in a game in team history: 10
  • Most touchdowns in a game by a rookie: 4 – De’Von Achane
  • Most points scored in a game: 24* – Raheem Mostert, De’Von Achane
  • Most touchdowns in a game: 4* – Raheem Mostert, De’Von Achane
  • Most rushing yards in a game by a rookie: 203 – De’Von Achane
  • Most passing yards through three games in Dolphins history: 1,024 – Tua Tagovailoa
  • Most receiving yards through three games in Dolphins history: 412 – Tyreek Hill
  • Most PATs in a game: 10 – Jason Sanders

Other Amazing Stats From Broncos-Dolphins

But there’s more.

The Dolphins also scored the most points (70) by any NFL team since 1966 and tied for the third-most in any game in NFL history: (1. Chicago, Dec. 8, 1940, at Washington 73; 2. Washington Nov. 27, 1966 vs. N.Y. Giants 72. The Bears’ 73 points came in the playoffs.)

Miami’s 726 total yards were the second-most in a game in NFL history and most since 1951: (L.A. Rams, Sep. 28, 1951 vs. N.Y. Yankees, 735.)

The Dolphins’ 130 points and 1,651 total yards are the most through three games of any NFL since at least 1970.

The Dolphins won for the 13th time in their last 15 games at home, which is the team’s best 15-game stretch at Hard Rock Stadium in the regular season since going 13-2 from Oct. 7, 2001 to Dec. 15, 2002.

The Dolphins on Sunday improved to 11-1 in games that Tua Tagovailoa starts against teams with a head coach that won a Super Bowl, including 10 wins in a row.

Running backs De’Von Achane and Raheem Mostert are the second pair of teammates in NFL history to score four touchdowns each in the same game. The other? Chiefs backs Priest Holmes and Derrick Blaylock, who did so on Oct. 24, 2004 vs. Atlanta.

Achane and Mostert become the fourth and fifth players in Dolphins history to total four touchdowns in a game

Achane’s 203 rushing yards were the most by any NFL player in the first or second game of his career in the Super Bowl era (since 1970). He had one career carry prior to Sunday.

Jimmy Garoppolo is known for being a serviceable QB at the NFL level, getting the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl before falling short to the Kansas City Chiefs, and his fascinating dating history. Jimmy G hasn’t always kept his private life a secret.

Many NFL broadcasters have spoken about how handsome Jimmy G is, so his dating track record is all the rave in social circles. The life of an NFL QB also draws a lot of attention, and Jimmy G’s life on and off the football field is no different.

Who Is Jimmy Garoppolo Dating Now?

The name most linked to Garoppolo these days is Giuliana Milan. Neither Garoppolo nor Milan have confirmed their relationship status, but the internet sleuths on social media believe they can confirm the connection.

Milan has attended NFL games in the past, wearing Garoppolo’s jersey. She has also been chummy with NFL players’ wives. Milan appears to be friends with George Kittle’s wife, Claire Kittle. As you recall, Garoppolo was the 49ers’ QB for several seasons, striking a rapport with the TE.

Traditionally, players’ wives and significant others develop relationships with the significant others of other players around the NFL. If Milan and Garoppolo are indeed an item, it would make sense that Milan is befriending the wives of players around the league.

Did Jimmy G Date a Porn Star?

There was a time when Garoppolo was the talk of the NFL. He had reached certain heights as an NFL starting QB, but his off-the-field exploits raised eyebrows around the league.

Garoppolo dated porn star Kiara Mia. Mia provided a few details about their brief relationship.

“Did I not say everything I touch turns to gold? He’s phenomenal. He’s talented. He’s a born star. I told you he’d kill it — I declared they were going to win the Super Bowl. Someone just messaged me a whole little stats thing on Jimmy Garoppolo, how he’s doing, and they were like, ‘he’s killing it this season.’ I was like, ‘I told you he would.’”

Garoppolo received more attention for this date with Mia than he anticipated. The media had plenty of questions for the signal-caller, which he took in stride. For his part, he learned how bright the NFL spotlight can be.

“Life is very different now. I’ve never really been big on being very public with things, even on social media. I’m not on there a ton. But my life’s looked at differently. I’m under a microscope. It’s like [head coach Kyle] Shanahan said, it is a good learning experience. I just have to take it in stride. It is what it is.”

What We Know About the Saints QB

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr was sacked by Rashan Gary on a 3rd-and-9 and was in obvious pain on the ground. What do we know about Carr’s injury, and what does this mean for the Saints?

Derek Carr Injury Update

Gary wrapped up and slammed Carr onto the ground very hard on a third-down sack in the third quarter. He was able to eventually walk off the field, but the Saints’ training staff was looking at the quarterback’s right arm as he got up.

The training staff led Carr to the locker room following the injury. Former first-overall pick Jameis Winston takes over for Carr in the Saints offense. New Orleans added Winston back to the roster in 2023 on a one-year, $4 million deal with a lot of cap ramifications leading until 2027.

New Orleans favored Andy Dalton a season ago, but in 2021, Winston was 5-2 as the Saints starter, and he was playing some of the best football of his career.

Through two games with New Orleans, Carr is 2-0, completing 44 of 69 passing attempts for 533 yards, a TD, and two INTs.

Update 2:55 PM ET
According to New Orleans Football’s Nick Underhill, Carr is questionable to return with a shoulder injury. Stacy Dales reported that Carr was receiving an X-ray in the locker room. Underhill later tweeted that he expects Carr to miss some time, based on what he’s hearing about the injury.

Update 3:15 PM
Carr is ruled out for the rest of the Saints’ game against the Packers.

Update 4:01 PM
Ian Rapoport tweeted that Carr is being taken to a local hospital to run additional tests. They will be checking for internal injuries, among other injuries.

Update 6:24 PM
Carr appears to have avoided a long-term injury, per NFL Network. While Carr will likely miss time, he probably did suffer a season-ending injury.

Derek Carr Injury Fantasy Fallout

Prior to being shaken up in the third quarter, Carr went 13 of 18 for 103 yards and a score. There is a chance that Taysom Hill could see some more snaps from the QB position for the rest of the contest against the Green Bay Packers.

Carr’s trip to the locker room, combined with a 17-0 lead for the Saints at the time of his exit, doesn’t exactly bode well for the fantasy outlook for the rest of New Orleans’ pass catchers for the remainder of this contest.

Saints receivers — namely Chris Olave, Michael Thomas, and Rashid Shaheed — will take a slight move down the weekly rankings if Carr misses significant time with this shoulder injury.
