Hogarth Repeats in Pasadena Senior

Published

on

Tim Hogarth of Northridge keeps repeating himself.

The 55-year-old Hogarth captured the Pasadena City Senior Championship for the second straight year by two strokes over Eddie Cho of Los Angeles and Goran Hagegard of Pasadena at Brookside Golf Club, which surrounds the Rose Bowl.

The 1996 USGA Public Links champion, Hogarth has won the Los Angeles City Championship 10 times, the Pasadena City Championship seven times and the Southern California Mid-Amateur Championship and the Kelly Cup Invitational four times each among numerous other tiles.

Hogarth, who played college golf at USC, posted a winning score of 72-67—139, three-under par, while Cho finished at 71-70—141, and Hagegard wound up at 68-73—141.

It wasn’t quite as good as Hogarth’s 11-stroke victory last year, but good enough.

Hawk Chenoeth of Pasadena was fourth at 71-71—142, while Craig Calkins of Manhattan Beach shot 73-70—143 to tie for fifth with Neil Moore of Redondo Beach, who finished at 72-71—143 and Mel Collins of Long Beach, who wound up at 70-73—143.

Ken Cruz of Long Beach totaled 68-76—144 to tie for eighth with Charles Yoo of Foothill Ranch, who shot 71-73—144, while Todd Wade of Twentynine Palms was 10th at 75-70—145.

Carlos Chavez of Downey won the A Flight with a score of 74-69—143, followed by Orlando Hernandez of Carpinteria at 73-71—144, while Chiwon Kang of Pasadena shot 71-70—141 to tie for the B Flight title with David Sims, also of Pasadena, who finished at 68-73—141.

Tak Kam of Los Angeles totaled 75-70—145 to share the C Flight title with Roel Astacaan of Sierra Madre, who wound up at 69-76—145, while Bill Ree of Glendale took the D Flight at 72-69—141 followed by Phillip Cannon of Pasadena, who finished at 73-70—143, and Bob Frey of Pasadena shot 77-72—149 to tie for the E Flight title with Barry Thomas of the NCGA, who came in at 73-76—149.

How to Play From a Downhill Lie

Published

Do you struggle when playing from a downhill lie?

In my opinion, the downhill lie is one of the trickier uneven lies to play from.

Getting good solid contact with the golf ball on a downhill lie means matching your body lines to the slope of the hill.

Here’s how to set up:

First, Match your shoulders, your hips, and your knees to that downslope so that your club can sweep down the hill.

Next, take a couple of practice swings to see where relative to your feet, does the club make contact with the grass. That contact point is likely to be further back than you would have with a normal flat stance. So take your address with the ball back towards your back foot and expect a lower ball flight as a result.

So remember, to make solid contact with the ball when you have got a downhill lie, match your shoulders, hips, and knees to the slope, and take your address with the ball exactly at the point in your stance where your practice swings made contact with the grass.

And … Swing normally.
